The oaks and cedars along the beach side are flagged — canopies swept west, branches short on the ocean side. That shape is not damage and it is not a defect. It is a tree that has adapted its structure to the loads it actually experiences.

The worst thing you can do to a wind-adapted tree is prune it to look symmetrical. Removing the compact, wind-firm growth on the exposed side and leaving the long limbs on the sheltered side changes the load balance the tree spent decades establishing. We prune with the shape, not against it.
