Downtown and in the historic neighborhoods — Lincolnville, Abbott Tract, Nelmar Terrace, Model Land Company — the work is delicate. Lots are small, houses are close, and many of the trees are older than the buildings. Almost everything gets climbed and rigged; there is rarely room to drop anything. Root protection is a constant concern because the mature live oaks here are living in soil volumes that would horrify a nursery grower, and they have adapted to it over a century.

West of US-1 and south along the SR-207 corridor, the picture changes. Bigger lots, more pine, more open ground, and a lot of laurel and water oaks planted when those neighborhoods went in. Those species are fast growing and short lived — most start hollowing out around 40 to 50 years — and that is where a large share of our removal work comes from.

Out toward the beach side and along the marsh, salt and wind take over as the driving factors. Cabbage palms, cedars, and wind-sculpted live oaks handle it; ornamentals planted without thinking about salt spray generally do not.

The City of St. Augustine takes its tree canopy seriously, and it should — the oaks over Cordova Street and Magnolia Avenue are part of why people move here. Removal of regulated trees inside city limits requires a permit, and approvals often come with replacement planting conditions.

The confusing part is that a St. Augustine mailing address does not mean you are inside city limits. Plenty of 32086 and 32092 addresses are unincorporated St. Johns County, where the land development code applies instead. We check the parcel before quoting, pull the permit, and document the tree so the application actually gets approved rather than bouncing back for more information.

St. Augustine does not need a direct hit to take tree damage. Matthew in 2016 and Irma in 2017 both did their work from offshore, and the flooding that came with them mattered as much as the wind. Our sandy soil drains fast but holds trees poorly once it is saturated, which is why perfectly healthy-looking oaks go over in a 45-mph gust after three days of rain.

The failures we clean up are predictable: laurel oaks with decay at the base, pines that lost their tops in a previous storm, and over-extended horizontal limbs that had been reaching over a roof for years. All three are visible in April to anyone who knows what to look for. A pre-season inspection and a weight-reduction trim costs a fraction of what we charge at 2 a.m. in September.
